Obituary for Rev. Eli Dale Hostetler

Rev. Eli Dale Hostetler, 76, a resident of Elkins Went home to hear “Well Done, good and faithful one” on February 26, 2019, from Mon Health in Morgantown.

Eli was born Friday, June 5, 1942, in Hartville, OH, a son of the late Roman A. Hostetler and Malinda Hershberger Hostetler. On October 17, 1964, in Elkins, he was married to the former Brenda Joyce “Joy” Wall who survives. They had celebrated fifty-four years of marriage.

Also left to cherish Eli’s memory is one son, Kevin E. Hostetler and wife, Joan, of Montrose, five granddaughters, Emily, Katie, Alexa, Ciara, and Serena, seven siblings, Saloma Sommers of Hartville, OH, Betty Jane Morris of Temple, TX, Dorothy Marie Shrock and husband, Noah, of Union City, PA, Joseph Allen Hostetler and wife, Wilma, Miriam Ruth Mullet and husband, Willie, of Sarasota, FL, Paul David Hostetler and wife, Kay, of Uniontown, OH, and Margaret Ann Slabaugh and husband, Lavern, of Hartville, OH, and many nieces and nephews.

Eli was preceded in death by six siblings, Clarence Hostetler, Ada Mast, William Hostetler, Sarah Mae King, Roman “Jr” Hostetler, and Melvin Ray Hostetler.

Born into an Amish family who later converted to Mennonite, Eli attended school in Hartville, OH, and in 1960, came to Elkins where he began working as an orderly at Davis Memorial Hospital, where he met the love of his life as he cared for her grandfather as a patient. After the hospital, he worked for Mon Power and as a salesman at Bauer Lumber. In 1977, he entered the ministry, pastoring the Job Church of God until moving to the Parsons Church of God in 1991. Even before he began ministering, he served the Church of God in West Virginia as a member of the Layman’s Board, and then, as a minister, he served on the Evangelism and Home Missions Board as well as the West Virginia State Council. He loved people and often changed plans to his family’s chagrin in order to minister to someone in need. He enjoyed building projects having tackled two new church buildings and a large addition during his time in Job as well as several additions and enhancements to the church in Parsons. He enjoyed WVU sports, was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and in later years, he became a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He enjoyed teaching and preaching and was very gifted in his calling.

Visitation will be at Hostetler Funeral Home in Parsons on Friday from 6 PM until 9 PM. On Saturday, March 2, 2019, Pastor Hostetler will be moved to the Parsons Church of God where friends may call from 11 AM until 1 PM, the funeral hour. Pastor Stewart Farley and Rev. Wayne Wicker will officiate and interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery.
